WEEK11
So.. I finally have some time to really reflect on last week.
Bologna Childrens Book Fair:
Incredible to see but there are some things I would do differently If I were to visit again.
1. I didnt have any intention of trying to meet publishers, as I wanted this trip to be about seeing what is out there but was difficult to keep my goal in check when I see people lining up to talk to publishers. I felt like i was going to be left behind. Not a good feeling. Next time, I will write down my goal and keep it with me as a reminder.
2. I wouldnt sign up for a portfolio review unless its with a publisher. My five minutes with an artist left me feeling like i didnt gain much. Her comments were “ I like this character.” “This is nice.”
3. If I want to meet publishers and network. I will make an appointment with them in advance! There is no point in coming all the way without a plan. The festival is essentially a conference for publishers to gain the rights to other published books. They arent interested in scouting for work.
4. I’d meet up with other illustrators and have fun drawing around the city. There are lots of meetups and so I was dissapointed that I didnt get to join since I was there for only one day.
5. Bring my own food. Crazy lines.
6. Take more breaks outside. There are so many people and it can be overwhelming. People can also become irritable. When this happens, I know its time to just get some fresh air away from the crowds.
7. Enter the competitions. I think this would reep more rewards than even just attending.
Playgrounds Festival:
I had alot of fun selling at the artist alley. I sold some originals, prints, lots of bookmarks and stickers, aswell as zines. This gave me a huge confidence boost. Especially after BCBF where I felt a bit demotivated. I went home with a great profit and the feeling of relief after such a long two weeks, prepping and travelling.
This week I want to focus on my character. I like to work on one thing at a time and fully give it my focus. I’m going to ignore the guilt i feel about his because well...I have the most fun this way.
Moving onto working on the potfolio report becasue I keep forgetting about it and then when having so much fun, the thought of it pops up and says “yoooohooo! remember me.” :’)
